Sanae Abdi, Morocco-born Female Politician Elected to German Parliament in Historical First

The Moroccan-German woman won a seat in the Cologne 1 region under the banner of the Social Democratic Party.

Abdi is the first Moroccan woman to successfully be elected to Germany’s legislative body. Born in Tetouan, Abdi moved to Germany to attend the Adolf Reichwein Comprehensive School in Ludenscheid.

During this time, Abdi also joined the SPD in 2008, at the age of 22.

Moroccan Swimmer Hassan Baraka Sets Guinness World Record

With a swimming time of 8 hours and 30 minutes, Baraka secured a Guinness record for setting the “fastest time to swim the length of the Aqaba Gulf.”

Moroccan swimmer Hassan Baraka has set a Guinness World Record for being the first person in the world to swim across the Gulf of Aqaba, northeastern arm of the Red Sea between Saudi Arabia and the Sinai Peninsula.

Anasse Kazib: The French-Moroccan Unionist Running for President in France : October 2021

Anasse Kazib.

With France’s 2022 presidential elections around the corner, Anasse Kazib , a French-Moroccan railroad worker, labor rights activist, and Marxist, has entered the race for the Elysee Palace.

Anasse Kazib was born in 1987 in Sarcelle, the northern suburbs of Paris, to a Moroccan family that emigrated to France in the 1970s to meet the country’s demand for cheap labor.

In July, Kazib, who is an employee of France’s state-owned railroad company (SNCF), announced his “pre-candidacy” for the 2022 presidential elections by launching a “digital campaign” to mobilize support and collect valuable signatures from the electorate.

Morocco’s Fathallah Sijilmassi Appointed as First Director General of ‘African Union Commission (AU)’ : October 2021

The African Union (AU) selected Fathallah Sijilmassi from a wide panel of high-level candidates to become the first Director General in the history of the AU Commission.

His appointment follows his previous  international obligations as Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean.

Born in 1966, the Moroccan politician and diplomat holds a PhD in economics from the Grenoble Institute of Political Studies in France.

He occupied different positions within Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation such as Director of Multilateral Cooperation and Director of European Affairs.

He was appointed as the Moroccan ambassador to France from 2004 to 2008 and upon his return to Morocco, King Mohammed VI named him director of the Moroccan Investment and Trade Agency (AMDIE) in 2009.

Sijilmassi had also been head of the Moroccan mission to the European Union (EU) and was also ambassador of Morocco in charge of the Barcelona Process and the Mediterranean dialogue of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Fathallah Sijilmassi has been awarded both the French orders ‘Legion of Honor’ and ‘Ordre national du Merite’.

Morocco’s El Amin Chentouf Smashes Own Paralympic Record to Win T12 Marathon Gold : Tokyo 2020 : September, 2021

Veteran El Amin Chentouf of Morocco defended his title in the T12 marathon for visually impaired athletes, smashing his own Paralympic record by over three minutes to finish in 2:21:43.

The 40-year-old retains his title after finishing more than more than four minutes ahead of silver medallist Clifford.

Further back in the field, Tunisian’s Wajdi Boukhili had been well placed to take the bronze until the 40km mark, where both he and compatriot Hatem Nasrallah slowed up to finish sixth and fourth, respectively. The bronze medal went to Tadashi Horikoshi of Japan.

Chentouf’s gold was the fourth for Morocco during the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, all of which have been won in athletics. Abdeslam Hili and Ayoub Sadni won gold in the men’s 400m in the T12 and T47 classes, respectively, and Zakariae Derhem topped the podium in the men’s shot put F33 class.

Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi Voted Best Arab Player in Ligue 1 : August 2021

Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi continues his phenomenal career. After making headlines in Italy’s Serie A with Inter Milan, when he won the league.

The Moroccan international player has continued to impress since his arrival at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) during the last summer transfer window.

Achraf Hakimi was named the best Arab player in the French Ligue 1 Uber Eats for the month of August.

The 22-year-old received the award following his outstanding performance wearing PSG’s jersey throughout the matches of last month. The fans were particularly taken by his pace and the great chemistry he has while playing alongside Kylian Mbappe.

In a fan poll sponsored by the official account of Ligue 1 on Facebook, the Moroccan international player ranked first after getting the majority of the votes ahead of his compatriot and Angers SCO midfielder Sofiane Boufal and Algeria’s Andy Delort.

This award comes days after the Moroccan Professional Footballers Union (UMFP) awarded Achraf Hakimi the trophy for the Best Moroccan Player in Foreign Leagues for the 2020-2021 season.

As part of its plans to clinch the Champions League title, PSG paid €71 million (add-ons included) to sign the versatile right-back, making him the most expensive defender in the club’s history.

After an impressive journey with Inter Milan, the football player has his sights set on other big challenges with PSG.

Morocco Wins Bronze in Paralympic Football – Tokyo Olympics : September 2021

The team competed in five-a-side football, emerging with the bronze after defeating China 4-0 in a brilliant performance in the third-place playoffs. The squad consisted of five players, all visually impaired, playing a modified version of football.

Overall, Morocco performed exceptionally well during the 2020 Paralympic Games that wrapped up . Moroccan athletes took home medals in shotput, track, discus, football, and various other athletic disciplines.

Mohamed Benchaaboun Named Africa’s ‘Finance Minister of the Year’ : June 23rd, 2021

The African Banker, a quarterly magazine that covers Africa-related financial news, has named Moroccan Minister of Economy and Finance Mohamed Benchaaboun as Africa’s “Finance Minister of the Year.

The winners of the 2021 edition of the African Banker Trophies were celebrated on June 23, 2021, during the prestigious awards ceremony, organized on the sidelines of the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank.

Soufiane El Bakkali, Moroccan Athlete Wins Race at Rome’s Diamond League (Italy) : June 10th, 2021

Soufiane El Bakkali recorded the world’s fastest time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for men this Thursday, June 10th at Rome’s Diamond League.

El Bakkali broke the world’s fastest time record of the season. 

The Diamond League is a series of field athletic competitions that take place every year. The first competition took place in 2010 and replaced the IAAF Golden League, organized in 1998. 

Soufiane El Bakkali’s timing for the 3,000 meters steeplechase race was 8:08.54, ranking as first in the category.

Lamia El Aaraje – Moroccan-French Candidate Wins the 20th Arrondissement of Paris: June 06th, 2021

Lamia El Aaraje – Politician

On June 6, Sunday – the Moroccan-French Lamia El Aaraje was elected as deputy to Paris’ 15th district. The French National Assembly after the second round of by-elections on Sunday.

The arrondissement, often referred to as Menilmontant, is situated on the right bank of the Seine River. It contains two of the city’s cosmopolitan districts, notably its namesake, Menilmontant, and Belleville.

A Doctor of Pharmacy, she has been previously elected as municipal councilor and counselor of Paris in the 20th arrondissement in 2020.

She holds the Socialist Party’s only seat in the French National Assembly.
