AUS students – Nour Elbery and Marawan Mahmoud from Egypt amongst 3 who Won ‘The Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award 2021’ : June 22nd, 2021

Nour Elbery and Marawan Mahmoud from Egypt, and Rashid Modibbo from Nigeria, selected a winners of the 9th edition of The Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award 2021.

The Award is held under the patronage of Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), in partnership with Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF).

The winning trio are architecture students from the American University of Sharjah (AUS).

Their winning submission, titled Cocoon, seeks to demonstrate how yesterday and tomorrow merge into one another, blurring time and rhythm, and forcing us to reflect on our shared experience of the pandemic, both individually and collectively. The installation will be available for viewing in November.

Members of this year’s selection committee included ADMAF Founder, Huda Ibrahim Alkhamis, NYUAD Interim Dean of Arts and Humanities, Awam Amkpa, Director of Abu Dhabi Art, Dyala Nusseibeh, and artist, Azza Al Qubaisi.

Executive Director of The NYUAD Art Gallery and the University’s Chief Curator Maya Allison added, “The Christo Award offers the unique opportunity to young artists to create an artwork that, in the spirit of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work, can be publicly exhibited and enjoyed. This year we witnessed how the artists responded to the uncertainty and challenging environment of this time, by using their creativity to design a Cocoon for humanity.”

The Christo and Jeanne-Claude Award is open to UAE-based students and recent graduates and was established as a launchpad for visual artists across the Emirates.

Arab Filmmakers Kaouther Ben Hania and Sameh Alaa Join the Short Film Jury – Cannes Film Festival 2021

UAE Elected to UN Security Council : June 11th, 2021

United Arab Emirates elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2022-2023.

The UAE is one of five countries elected to sit as non-permanent members on the Security Council in 2022 and 2023.

The others are Brazil, Albania, Gabon and Ghana, and the new arrivals could potentially shift the power balance within the world body, diplomats predicted.

“The UAE has always been ready to assume its share of the responsibility to confront urgent global challenges, in cooperation with the international community, and this was the primary motivation for our campaign for Security Council membership,” said Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, the UAE’s minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation.

Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, the UAE’s permanent representative to the UN, said her country’s role on the Security Council “stems from our belief that our values and principles can help advance progress toward our common goal of international peace and security.”

The UAE joined the UN in 1971, the year the country was founded. The only time it has previously held a seat on the Security Council was in 1986-1987.

Lamia El Aaraje – Moroccan-French Candidate Wins the 20th Arrondissement of Paris: June 06th, 2021

Lamia El Aaraje – Politician

On June 6, Sunday – the Moroccan-French Lamia El Aaraje was elected as deputy to Paris’ 15th district. The French National Assembly after the second round of by-elections on Sunday.

The arrondissement, often referred to as Menilmontant, is situated on the right bank of the Seine River. It contains two of the city’s cosmopolitan districts, notably its namesake, Menilmontant, and Belleville.

A Doctor of Pharmacy, she has been previously elected as municipal councilor and counselor of Paris in the 20th arrondissement in 2020.

She holds the Socialist Party’s only seat in the French National Assembly.

Ahmed Helmy Appointed by UNICEF as Regional Ambassador for Middle East & North Africa (MENA) : June 06th, 2021

UNICEF chose Egyptian megastar Ahmed Helmy to serve as Regional Ambassador for the Middle East and North Africa.

“I am truly excited about this new role, I am delighted to continue to work with UNICEF to advocate for children’s rights across the region” said Helmy during the ceremony tailor made to announce his appointment as regional ambassador which was held through online video on June 6.

In 2017 Helmy was chosen to serve as UNICEF Ambassador in Egypt and has participated in multiple events to advocate for child protection and empowerment.

Helmy has previously cooperated with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to promote for the Food for Education project.

Additionally, Helmy collaborated with UNICEF in the #FightUnfair social media campaign launched in December 2015 to shed the light on the challenges facing children and young adults in Egypt.

Both Helmy and his wife Zaki were appointed as UNICEF Egypt Ambassadors; both were featured in two short videos promoting for ending violent disciplinary practices.

Morocco Wins Gold : 28th Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad : May 24th, 2021

For the second year in a row Morocco wins at the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad held in Tunisia.

28th Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) hosted virtually in Tunisia on May 23-24.

The PAMO the annual competition consists of two 4.5 hour rounds and participants must answer three questions per round. The event challenged students to answer advanced calculus and trigonometry questions.

Students from 14 countries including Angola, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Togo, Tunisia, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Republic of the Congo, and Zimbabwe competed in the event.

Over 60 high school students representing their home countries attended the virtual event with Morocco’s El Ibbaoui Mohamed and Achak Abderrahmane coaching the team to victory.

The organization crowned Beni Mellal’s Aya Akargout the “Queen of African Mathematics 2021” after her gold medal win alongside Marrakech’s Youssef Bouhtouch.

In addition, Morocco’s Mohammed Ayoub, Adam Kharraz, Hiba Benabou, and Asmae Hibat Allah won silver medals.

All of the students are members of Morocco’s national mathematics team operating under the Ministry of Education.

Oman’s Dr. Amal Bint Saif Wins Sasakawa Health Prize 2021 : May 2021

Dr. Amal bint Saif al-Maani, Director of Department of Infection Prevention, Ministry of Health.

Dr. Amal Bint Saif received the prestigious Sasakawa Health Prize 2021, awarded by the World Health Organization for boosting awareness of antimicrobial resistance and the importance of Hand Hygiene.

Ministry of Health said: “The Executive Council of the World Health Organisation announced the winning of Dr. Amal Bint Saif, a consultant in infectious diseases for children and infection control and director of the Department of Infection Prevention and Control of the General Directorate for Disease Control and Control at the Ministry of Health.

“To help combat antimicrobial resistance, Dr Al Maani engaged in the national project “Be Role Model for Hand Hygiene” as part of her advocacy work for HandHygiene in the community and health care settings in Oman,” WHO added

Egypt’s Dr.Hala Zayed Elected as Chair of Arab Health Ministers Council : May 2021

Egypt’s Minister of Health Dr. Hala Zayed was elected as the Chair of the Executive Office of the Health Ministers Council at the Arab League for the second time in a row.

Hala Zayed is the second female minister in the history of the Health Ministry since its establishment in 1937.

She has a PhD and Master’s in Business Administration from the Arab Academy of Science and Technology. She also obtained a diploma in Hospitals Administration from the AUC. She has a Master’s degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She received her medical degree MBBS from The University of Zagazig.
